There was some danger not only to Henri during his mission, but also to Esmee in the book. Esmee loved lighting up the lighthouse to help to save men and women from shipwrecks. I liked the fact that at the back of the book, Laura mentioned that historically, women were leading out by becoming lighthouse keepers. After all, it was her mother that began to make the wonderful and delightful chocolates. She loved making these wonderful sweets but wanted more and something that she could do in her own rights. Esmee and Henri did meet again and were planning to get married, but first Henri needed to depart on a secret mission.Įsmee became a chocolatier after her Mother's death. Their courtship ended with heated words and later both regretted it. That makes this book so much more meaningful to me.Įsmee and Henri Lennox were sweethearts 10 years prior, but because Esmee's own mother was married to an admiral and there were times when her mother did not see her husband, Esmee did not want the same future in her marriage. I liked that the author mentioned someone being adrift several times and especially the phrase "A Heart Adrift." I also give the author kudos for including Scripture from The Holy Bible in this storyline.

The author did a great job researching facts in the time period around the Revolutionary War. It was also full of historical information that was new to me. I loved the cover of this book and could picture Esmee Shaw thinking about her sea captain. I received the book from the publisher and was under no obligation to post a positive comment. If you are looking for a heart-warming historical romance, you will absolutely love this newest book by Laura Frantz. Even in times of terrible grief and suffering, Esmee and Henri hold onto each other and to their faith to guide them. I loved Esmee’s strength of character and Henri’s generous compassionate heart. The story is infused with such realistic backdrop of the port city and such rich and fascinating history ranging from building a lighthouse operated by a woman to delicious details involved in chocolate and candy making during the colonial times to dangers of privateering in the midst of war against the French. Laura Frantz has a beautifully lyrical way of writing that transports the reader to the heart of York, Virginia. I do so love second chance romance and Esmee and Henri have it down perfectly in 1755 Virginia. “Did she realize she held his heart? Not just a piece of it.
